Lymphedema Management

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition involving swelling as a result of insufficiency of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is an important part of our circulatory system and our immune system. If lymph nodes are inadequate, destroyed or removed, swelling may develop.

Lymphedema may occur as a result of insufficiency at birth or it may occur due to damage of the lymphatic system. For example, during breast cancer treatment, the lymph nodes near the breast may be removed or damaged resulting in swelling of the arm.

Signs and Symptoms of Lymphedema:

  • Swelling of the limb on the involved side after cancer treatment
  • Heaviness of the limb
  • Clothes or jewelry are tight
  • Skin feels hard or tight

If you or someone you know has severe edema or a high amount of swelling it is important that it is evaluated by a specialist in lymphedema management. If the immune function of the lymphatic system is compromised, infections or further damage can be avoided by taking simple precautionary steps.

Prevention of Lymphedema

Prevention of Lymphedema

Protect Your Skin:
Animal scratches, insect bites, injections, blood pressure cuffs, skin burns, sunburns, hot tubs, and high temperature baths can exacerbate lymphedema.

Avoid Injury:
Avoid overexertion and repetitious activities with the affected limbs and always wear protective gloves while cleaning or gardening.

Live Healthy:
Avoid weight gain or obesity and exercise in moderation regularly. Local or systemic inflammation can exacerbate lymphedema.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to treat patients experiencing vertigo, imbalance, and dizziness due to vestibular dysfunction. People with vestibular or inner ear disorders often experience problems with balance and position or movement-related dizziness. These primary symptoms are often accompanied by secondary symptoms associated with a reduction in activity levels. Secondary symptoms include decreased strength, loss of range of motion and increased musculature tension, especially in the neck and shoulder area, leading to muscle fatigue and headaches. The primary goal in vestibular rehabilitation is to PREVENT FALLS and get you back to enjoying your life!

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy is an exercise-based program designed to promote central nervous system compensation for inner ear deficits. VRT can help with a variety of vestibular problems, including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) once resolved with the Epley or Liberatory manuever, unilateral or bilateral vestibular hypofunction (reduced inner ear function on one or both sides) associated with Ménière’s disease, labyrinthitis, and vestibular neuritis. Even individuals with long-term unresolved inner ear disorders who have undergone a period of medical management with little or no success may benefit. VRT can also help people with an acute or abrupt loss of vestibular function following surgery for vestibular problems.

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy uses specific head, body, and eye exercises designed to retrain the brain to recognize and process signals from the vestibular or inner ear system and coordinate them with additional information from your eyes and your muscles and tendons. Your therapist will perform a thorough evaluation including taking your history, performing a vision, vertigo, balance, gait and a musculoskeletal assessment to develop an individualized treatment plan based on your problems.

LSVT BIG®

LSVT BIG®

LSVT BIG® is a specialized treatment program specifically designed for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. This program helps improve individual’s physical movement, strength, and balance. Participants of this program have seen a significant decrease in the progression of their symptoms, as well as a lower risk for falls or other injuries.

At The Rehab Group, the LSVT BIG® program is facilitated by a certified and trained physical therapist or occupational therapist. This program teaches the participant a series of exercises that are to be performed daily, as well as lifestyle changes meant to empower the participant in the prospect of remaining independent in their daily functions.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative neurological condition that affects the deep portions of the brain meant to control movement. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease will typically present with tremors, stiffness in the joints, slower movement, and balance problems.

The LSVT BIG® program has been researched and evidenced to prevent Parkinson’s disease symptoms from progressing so quickly. If you or someone you know has been given this diagnosis, it is important that you are evaluated by an LSVT BIG® Certified physical or occupational therapist today in order to determine if this program is right for you.

Womans Health

Women’s/Men’s Pelvic Health

Women’s Health

Did you know that around 24% of U.S. women have one or more pelvic floor disorders? The frequency of pelvic floor disorders increases with age with 40% of women from 60-79 years old and 50% of women 80 and older. These disorders occur when the muscles and soft tissue in the pelvic cavity weaken or are injured. Despite the surge in pads and different products for leakage, urinary incontinence and pelvic pain are not normal conditions that one has to live with. Most don’t realize that many of these disorders can be address in an outpatient Physical Therapy setting.

Physical Therapy addresses women’s health issues including pain or injury while pregnant, post-partum, general pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, painful menstruation, prolapse, and incontinence. At The Rehab Group, you’ll work with a trained Doctor of Physical Therapy in a private setting to address your needs. You’ll be instructed in specific exercises to help strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and manual therapy will be provided as needed. Our physical therapist is certified in pelvic floor Physical Therapy, which includes both external and internal manual therapy along with targeted exercises for relaxation and strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles.
